Once, I had a request from a serious voice problem sufferer who was residing in the UK. He was a throat cancer survivor; and with all of the chemotherapy and radiation therapy, he ended up having both vocal cords damaged. One of his vocal cords was paralyzed and the other one was simply non-functional. He approached me with all kinds of questions and when his question came around the price of my nonsurgical voice repair services and treatment sessions, he exclaimed: “Oh my God, it is too much!”

When I asked him what he would do with the same amount of money if he would not end up paying for my services? He said: “I would go on vacation…” Then I asked him if he would enjoy that vacation, being afraid to open his mouth and constantly be conscious on how he would be received and perceived by other people? On that note, I’ve heard the tears in his voice. He had obviously gotten my drift… so to speak. After this emotional moment, our deal had been finalized; and shortly after, I flew to London to attend to him and a couple of other people.

You, my reader, may ask: Did you fix his voice? My answer would be yes, but to a degree. Could I un-paralyze his vocal cord or make the other one functional? The answer is no. But, applying the Vocal Science ™ Method, I was able to create some base underneath of his very soprano-sounding voice; so he started to sound quite a bit more manly. His diction (enunciation and pronunciation) became much clearer and he started to sound, by far, more coherent. Needless to say, his confidence (after lots of tears and spent emotions) became more apparent; and thus his long-ago gone zest for life was actually coming back, and (at least to a degree) his life was reclaimed!

Had he become perfectly healthy and fully regained his voice? The answer is – not quite. But he gained a lot of knowledge, awareness and understanding with respect of what was happening to him in general and his vocal anatomy in particular. He now was able to bring the best of his voice upon his wish and command which, (we both agreed) by itself, is priceless. Having a clear map in his head with respect to how the physical sound travels, he was able to get hold of the best of his voice (pretty much) at any given moment. In other words, we both did the best we could!

Leaving back for Canada, I left this (previously) very emotionally, physically and vocally disturbed man with an intellectual understanding and kinesthetic feeling of how to power the sound of his voice to its best capacity; and, most importantly, how to save and protect to what he had been left with. As far as him and I were concerned, both of our missions had been accomplished!

I clearly was able to show him that there is LIFE that is worth living, especially after the completion of our voice, body and soul repair journey!

Regain your voice! As if you don’t take us up on our offers to fix your voice, just think what you could be missing!
We are world-class voice experts! It had been tested, tried and proven for many years!
The Vocal Science™ Method is a holistic approach to voice mechanics and to the human being as a whole. There could be numerous reasons why the person acquires a certain voice disorder and/or vocal issues.
It could be overall health issues like:
____
  • Thyroid problems
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Chronic laryngitis
  • Weight Problems (under or over)
  • Low fitness level – or lack thereof
  • Poor diet (consisting of fatty acidic and mucus-filled food products consumed on a regular basis)
  • High sugar and high blood pressure
  • Gastric acid reflux
  • Colon problems
  • Smoking, drinking and drug use (medical drugs including)
____
Those factors above are just to name a few…
And, of course, there are also environmental causes which are contributing to voice problems.
To give you an example, a few years ago, I received a client from out of town who was diagnosed with what’s called Spasmodic Dysphonia. I, colloquially, call it “vocal epilepsy”, as in this very unfortunate precedence, the voice usually spasms uncontrollably (just like one’s body would be seizing due to a regular epilepsy condition).
This client (during my assessment with her) told me her story of how she acquired such a nasty voice disorder. Her husband and her, at the time, moved into a new house with a finished basement which had carpeted floors.
Only a few days later, they had a flood in that basement; and naturally, the carpets became very wet…
Those years, these types of carpets were treated with certain chemicals; and thus, when the flood occurred, those chemicals spread out throughout the house, and of course, effected the air my client and her husband were breathing. After that, both of them acquired a lot of health problems in general; but my client, who managed (in time) to concur the majority of her health problems, still was suffering with the very complicated disorder (such as spasmodic dysphonia is).
This client took only 10 hours of private sessions with me and 10 hours of semi-private instruction, which was provided in a group setting (the ‘Healthy Voice/Vocal Workshop Summit’).
Needless to say, her condition improved exponentially and she was even able to sing in church during Christmas Mass (according to her own words, it was a ‘Christmas Miracle’).
Regain your voice by “cleaning up” your act, I.e., improve your diet, do not pollute your body with fat, mucus-filled and acidic foods, stop your bad habits (smoking, drinking and drug use), stay away as much as you can from medical drugs as well, and try to employ natural herbs and remedies as well as natural and organic foods (which do not contain too much salt, flour or sugar, and also do not produce excess of mucus or acid).
And lastly, we would like to address the mechanical side of voice use which, if disrupted, could cause serious voice problems and sometimes could even lead to the point of no return.

The Vocal Science technique advocates the safe use of the voice and the use of the latter “upon design”.

With these specially designed speech and singing exercises, the voice will be lifted off of the vocal box and off of the vocal cords and restructured to the different set of muscles; thus the pressure of the sound effecting the vocal anatomy will be practically eliminated.
If the voice damage had already occurred, the natural herbs and remedies will be administered to heal the throat flora, to clean the vocal anatomy from the impurities and to strengthen the “vocal machinery” over all.
The knowledge of the above will produce the confidence in speech presentations and, nevertheless, vocal performances. It will also produce the health and vibrant in one’s being.

In conclusion…, the question is: What price tag could you put on the above?

It just happened to me….

I got hit by a Dear! I have to say that it was a very strange experience, to say the list! I have not seen it coming… What I saw, was a deer’s face in my windshield!

It came out of the blue, so to speak. It was just after 10 pm and I was driving at a speed of only 56 km! Thank God that I got a speeding ticket 2 days earlier, lol, Otherwise I possibly would be going much faster and thus, the impact of my collision with the deer could have been much more serious. So my car (which I managed to drive home somehow) ended up being damaged for over $11.000!  To my surprise, the body shop, where the car was towed, said that they will take care of everything, mechanics included. Now, 2 weeks later, they called me and told me that they were unable to fix the engine! Go figure! So they had to ship my car to a Volkswagen dealership after all! Now, at least it makes sense! The body shop is the shop meant to fix the body of the car and the dealership is responsible for the mechanical part of it.

I am saying that, one more time again, to compare this ordeal to the ordeal of those who have been suffering from various voice/vocal disorders.

get_excited_we_have_the_too

Just earlier today, I was talking on the phone with the person residing in the Middle East and who, for some time, had been suffering from excessive silent acid reflux which, by extension, effected his speaking and singing voice. Nevertheless, he sounded quite low and quite raspy while speaking.

In his original e-mail to us, he was asking if we are doing it remotely, i.e., via Skype, Facetime or what have you…? I outright wrote to him that his problem, as any other vocal problem, is quite serious, and it qualifies as internal medicine and cannot be addressed (and furthermore treated or cured) remotely.

I also told him that if anybody will offer him that, they will be after his money and not after his interest.

Now let’s visualize my car being fixed remotely…

Is that possible? Take a wild guess……

Now, jokes aside…

Likewise, the damaged voice is a very serious matter, as it has to be restored and brought to its original state, which is easier said than done!

Apparently, my potential client has been researching all kinds of speech therapists and ENT doctors who were recommending him various medications to “treat” and even “cure” silent acid reflux.

Like my former client (band singer) from Venezuela, he too had difficulty to breathe, especially at night time and in order to sleep (at least remotely), he had to use two or three pillows to create almost a sitting position rather than actually lying down in bed.

Needless to say, both guys were doing everything and anything to make their lives easier and suffer less. (At least they thought so…)

Did that help, you may ask?

Again, it did…somewhat …hardly.

The guy from Venezuela finally (after 5 years of planning) reached Toronto and took 20 hours of instruction and treatment. And to complete his voice recovery (and for the maintenance), he attended a 10 hour group Healthy Voice/Vocal Workshop.

On the third day, he (surprisingly) was late for his morning session.

When he finally showed up, he exclaimed – “Sorry Diana, but for the first time in many years, I slept like a log and did not even hear my baby crying”. For the record, he did travel to us with his whole family, including a newborn baby.

By that time (via my special speech and singing exercises), his voice was already lifted off of his vocal box and off of his vocal cords, thus releasing the vocal box and the chest from the pressure of the sound.

The voice was restructured to the set of his facial muscles and thus, was positioned quite far away from the gastric acid, which before was burning his vocal cords and interfering with his breathing.

Needless to say, his problem was solved and, as a side effect, he learned how to speak and sing.

He learned and utilized the method of how to speak and sing smart and not hard, while concurrently, he also learned how to apply minimum efforts to achieve maximum results! Needless to say, he was able to power his voice ‘upon design’ and knew predominantly what will come out of his mouth without taking wild guesses and keeping his fingers crossed and dying of fear.

There is, of course a possibility with acid reflux (as well as with some other internal health disorders), that it has to be addressed either way, and not necessarily, but rather simultaneously, with persisting voice issues.

But at least, in the interim (with the proper voice mechanics instruction and treatment), the person’s voice has been saved. It has also been assured that the voice damage will never occur ever again, (should the person retain the specific instructions embedded into him during the voice restoration sessions).

The moral of the above is:

Do not look for gimmicks, such as the “remote approach” or unneeded prescribed medical drugs! Fix the mechanics of voice first and everything else after that.

Now, again speaking of my car:

The body shop, evidently, fixed the frame of the car, not realizing that the mechanical parts could appear to be beyond repair! As of today, the Volkswagen dealership cannot figure out what is wrong with the engine and other mechanical parts under the hood. The body shop made the car look real good, shiny and clean; but if, mechanically, it’s still not sound, then all their work will be completely obsolete!

For some reason people who suffer from voice disorders (speakers or singers) think that there is something wrong with their voice…? They do not realize that the main problem lies due to the insufficient application of the voice, which could potentially cause all kinds of voice damage.

More and more people are enquiring about how to treat their strained vocal cords without the need for surgery or any other invasive procedures. When they actually call with their enquiry, I could hear that their voice is partially lost (sometimes less, sometimes more).

However, somebody just called me a few days ago, telling me (with their whispered voice), that the ENT Doctor had diagnosed him or her with the strained vocal cords. Firstly, I had to ask that person if they were male or female, as for the lack of voice, it was undetectable. Right away, I suspected that her problem (she revealed to me that she was a 64 years old female) was, by far, more serious then just strained vocal cords.

I have told her (since she had absolutely no sound) that I would have no idea if I could recover her voice. The fact is that the fully lost voice could indicate that the problem could be as serious as throat cancer!

In her case, the fully lost voice was more a symptom then the cause; and therefore, until the actual cause is revealed, there is no point to attempt any kind of non-surgical voice repair.

However, when the voice (due to its strain) has been drawn to the lower throat position, it is quite recoverable via special speech exercises coupled with the special body movements and the actual voice technique, where the voice is being re-channeled from the vocal anatomy to the different set of facial muscles.

Once those facial muscles are developed enough to except the voice (which is a substantial physical material body), it has to be put to work in full conjunction and coordination with the abdominal muscles, which will play the supportive role to assist with the actual lift of the sound, to the place which is called the resonator or (colloquially) natural amplifier.

Now the voice will be recovered from the depths of the physical body and lifted away from the vocal box and the vocal cords.

In this instance, the space for healing is released. No doubts that the flora of the throat is quite disturbed.

That’s where I would administer a set of natural herbs and remedies, which will aid greatly to the overall healing.

If you compare the above to a person who had nearly drowned and a person who actually did drown, you would see the picture whereas, in the first case, there was a chance of reviving the swimmer, apposed to the second case, the swimmer would never regain the vital signs, as it was simply too late.

On this note, we hope to help those who we still can revive to the normal life (and, needless to say, respectively to the normal voice) and hope that those (with completely lost voices) will check it out as soon as possible; and thus find the real cause, which (if found early) could save their lives.

How The Suppressed Emotions, Lack of Talking in the Childhood Years (Due To Strict Upbringing), And Enormous Stress, Can Effect Your Speaking Voice Down The Road To Your Adulthood?

Due to my profession and extensive practice, I meet all kinds of people; all heights and weights, all colours and cultures and (in general) people from all walks of life.

Being situated in Canada for over 36 years and running my Professional Vocal School for nearly 33 years, surprisingly enough (and especially lately) my business took a different turn and became at least 95% international. Our primary market for voice repairs happens to be American.

Quite recently, I completed two voice repair projects, one of which was from Seattle, US, and the other from the State of Minnesota.  Needless to say, both of those adults (nevertheless with speech/voice disorders) very-much-so succeeded in their voice recovery with intense implementation of the Vocal Science technique. They had different voice disorders, but what they had in common was that both were very soft spoken; and as they revealed to me, they have spoken in that manner even before their voices ceased.

In order to help these people (or anybody else for that matter) I usually ask them questions about their childhood and upbringing.

Both revealed that they were deprived of desired love and care from their parents and loved ones. They had strong curfews on every level, but especially, they were practically restricted of their speech and self expression. They (for the most time) were not allowed to speak in front of their parents presence or, if they were, they had to speak very quietly and very softly.

Unfortunately, they carried it all to their adulthood. They grew up to be very suppressed emotionally and vocally. They also grew up being very sensitive to any imperfections in life, as they were brought up to be told that they were never good enough and that they had to achieve the absolute perfection in anything they were doing.

Naturally, their confidence (in life in general) was pretty shut down and, nevertheless, their spirit (I.e., their voice) was quite shut down as well. However, to their credit, they were trying to compensate the lack of communication and the lack of self expression in the past by acquiring good jobs which required a lot of communication, and also, lots of friends, which were compensating for the lack of closeness with their families.

Now they went all out… so to speak. They spoke at all given times; and spoke loud (without boarders).

And then suddenly, they have noticed that their voices becoming, again, soft and softer… Their voices started to crack, became hoarse and raspy and the male voice started braking into soprano tone. They were devastated, because, finally, now when they could freely express themselves, their voices were not cooperating with their inner desires, unfortunately.

The above stories are pretty sad, however, both had a happy ending. I was able to help them to recover their voice and rejuvenate their spirits. Now, everything what they feel became congruent with their vocal expression!

The mission has been accomplished and two more lives were salvaged, saved and nurtured to the greater success in their adulthood years yet to come

For at least the last 25 years, we have been specializing in extreme voice disorders such as:

  • Muscle Tension Dysphonia
  • Spasmodic Dysphonia
  • Polyps & Nodules on the vocal cords
  • Cysts & Lesions on the vocal cords and the throat
  • Acid Reflux effecting the vocal box
  •  Laryngitis
  • Sulcus Vocalis (enlarged gap between the vocal folds)
  • Strained Vocal Cords
  • Vocal Cord Paresis
  • Partially Lost Voice

– And that’s just to name a few.

Both regular speaking people and or singers could possess the above-described vocal injuries.

As strange as it sounds, the regular speaking people are taking their injuries much harder then the actual singers.

In fact, in a lot of cases, singers may still have their speaking voices somewhat intact; and therefore, it is not that detrimental for them just to lose their singing voice capacity then for speakers to completely lose their tool for communication. Of course, no matter how you slice it, speakers and singers are both greatly effected by their voice/vocal injury.

The speakers, in a lot of times, feel that their lives are over, as it is difficult for them to communicate. They often begin to learn sign language and/or rely on writing on a white board in order to be heard and understood. Moreover, they are usually, for years, have been trying different speech therapists and vocal coaches; but nevertheless, evidently, always to no avail.

I would like to quote one of our recent Non-Surgical Voice Repair Clients who had said in her Post Course Letter to us:

“It’s such a relief to have someone to go to if I have issues with my voice, as before I felt so alone and had no idea what to do, so many thanks”.

This particular person had suffered with quite significant voice loss, severe pain in the throat, and had to live with the diagnosis of Muscle Tension Dysphonia for 5 years.

This young beautiful adult was suggested to stop speaking for good, go on disability and find a job which does not require any speaking. Before she came to us, she was ready to quit University, prior quitting the high school choir and the part-time job, which had required her to speak with the customers.

Her Mom and her flew to us for over 30 hours to obtain our unique instruction and natural holistic treatment.

By the end of her 50 hour ordeal, not only was she able to speak with clear announced and pronounced voice (as her mom qualified as a radio voice), but she was also able to embark upon my regular singing exercises (designed for singers with no vocal damage) and a piece of the song “Can’t help Falling In Love” by Elvis.

That was our Triumph!!

No doubts this beautiful girl regained her speaking and even (partially) her singing voice (partially only due to the lack of time), and has already begun to reclaim her life back and will continue to do so for days to come. As far as we are concerned, one more life had been salvaged and reclaimed with very hard work – but with a very high reward in the end.

“Although it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and there were many obstacles along the way, I completed 50 hours with Diana because in the end it was worth it.“

Elle Rider of New Zealand

On that note, we would say – Way to go Girl!

The Best is Yet to Come!

Regain your voice and your confidence back!

Your voice… desired and deserved!

More and more professional artists end up with the vocal injuries.

Nearly every week, we hear that various concerts and tours have been canceled and the lead singers (either a soloist or band lead singer) just about to undergo a vocal cord surgery.

How sad is that? Sad indeed!

hoarse-voice.jpg

Why does it happen and why it happens to so many artists? Is it because they are overworked and over-stressed? I think that definitely the above are the factors.  However, if their technical merit of their singing had been intact, less tragedies and cancellations of their performances would take place.

So, human being puzzle (in a manner of speaking), like any puzzle, has many components and pieces, which have to fall into the right places. Those singers’ lifestyles, naturally, are very active and filled with a lot of appearances, interviews and performances.

Due to the above, their immune systems become weakened; and thus, as well, they could much easier pick up any viruses or any sicknesses for that matter. In their busy lives, their voices are in the most used mode; and thus, for them to get any vocal injury is literally not too difficult.

The other aspect of it is a lack of knowledge of how to power their voice with no pain or strain on their vocal anatomy. Also a lack of knowledge of how to work smart and not hard; and with the minimum effort achieve the maximum result.

The latter will assure “The Biggest Winner” rather then “The Biggest Loser”; however, if they manage to “lose” their vocal injuries, or better yet, not to acquire them in the first place, they will become “ the biggest loser” (in the better understanding of that word).

I could compare it with a TV show, In fact, named “The Biggest Loser”. That show is about the struggle of very obese people who forever have been struggling with their excess weight. They obviously have been unable to lose that much weight on their own, and they also realized (some of them just in time) that they need professional help not only to lose their weight, but also to save their lives. Was that easy for them? Not at all! But majority of them claimed their lives back; and some of them just simply saved their lives.

They have desired to live the normal life and they have realized that they have deserved it!

Yes, they became “The Biggest Losers”; but in reality, They Are The Champions!

The band “Queen” performed an all time well-known song called “We Are The Champions”. This song is indeed very inspirational and it is applicable to all of us!

So if you, my reader, also have any vocal issues, (speaking or singing), become inspired to learn how to avoid vocal injuries. However, if they have already occurred, learn how to fix all of your vocal imperfections and acquire a whole new application of voice, using all together new parts of your anatomy to save, protect and prosper your voice to the foreseeable future!
