Not only a great amount of people are losing voices these days, but also a lot of them are experiencing severe pain in their throats.

Before, we had complaints, primarily from singers; but more and more, just regular people (speakers) are complaining on extreme discomfort in their vocal box in general.

The singers are usually ruining their vocal anatomy simply for the lack of education and simple knowledge; and thus, lack of the proper vocal technique. They very often end up with laryngitis, i.e., with the hoarse and raspy voice; not to mention an extreme pain in their throats. The singers (also very often) end up with the growth on their vocal cord(s); such as polyps, nodules, cysts and etc.

The regular people who do not take proper care of their voice and (in majority of times) their health in general, usually end up with muscle tension dysphonia or spasmodic dysphonia. Nevertheless, they (of course) are also susceptible to the growth on their vocal cords, but more like papilloma and polyps. They are also very susceptible to lesions in their throats, as well as burnt vocal cords due to the occurrence of acid reflux.

Unfortunately, both speakers and singers are also not exempt from vocal cord(s) paralysis/paresis.

Naturally, there is physical pain (to whichever degree for whichever vocal injury); but also, there is an emotional pain, as both speakers and singers realize that something out of the ordinary is happening to them and their voices. And, especially at the beginning of this ordeal, they feel quite lost, not knowing what to do and where to get help.

Our philosophy at The Royans Institute for Non-Surgical Voice Repair is “All Voice – No pain”!

Once we uncover and discover (in a manner of speaking) the injured voice, we (via special speech exercises, coupled with specially designed body motions) try, at all costs, to release the “trapped” voice from its vocal anatomy “prison”, (so to speak). Especially in the case of Muscle Tension Dysphonia (where neck muscles literally hold the voice in ‘contempt’), the voice, nevertheless, has to be “yanked” out of there, which is (no doubt) easier said then done.

The neck muscles are “truly in love” with the human voice and even when my client and I think that the voice is finally “flying” out of there, it is like a swamp, “calling” it and literally “pulling” it back in.

Sometimes, the recurrence of the above happens multiple times.

Once the voice is finally released from the lower throat and the neck muscles, the pain usually subsides and the sufferer feels a great release; and not only physically, but emotionally as well.

Now the human voice has to find a “new home”  – the facial muscles!

Those facial cavities will become a real saviour for anybody who had voice issues and everybody else who cares about their speaking/singing voice in general. Those (in a sense) sinus cavities will amplify the voice at least quadruple times over its volume; and naturally, will promote a proper articulation and enunciation. However, without the support of the abdominal muscles, the lift of the voice is not possible.

Therefore, the abdominal muscles have to be strengthened to be able to give a proper “launch” for the voice to “soar” to its aimed destination, provided that the sound lands within those facial muscles. At that point, the voice within the newly found facial muscles will be working in full conjunction and coordination with the abdominal muscles. The above (in turn) will minimize the use of the throat, larynx and the vocal cords.

To Conclude, there will be “All Gain and No Pain”, i.e., by osmosis, “All Voice and No Pain”, as (at that point) the vocal anatomy will be completely released from the pressure of the sound; and, in addition, nurtured with natural herbal and homeopathic remedies for its complete healing.

How The Suppressed Emotions, Lack of Talking in the Childhood Years (Due To Strict Upbringing), And Enormous Stress, Can Effect Your Speaking Voice Down The Road To Your Adulthood?

Due to my profession and extensive practice, I meet all kinds of people; all heights and weights, all colours and cultures and (in general) people from all walks of life.

Being situated in Canada for over 36 years and running my Professional Vocal School for nearly 33 years, surprisingly enough (and especially lately) my business took a different turn and became at least 95% international. Our primary market for voice repairs happens to be American.

Quite recently, I completed two voice repair projects, one of which was from Seattle, US, and the other from the State of Minnesota.  Needless to say, both of those adults (nevertheless with speech/voice disorders) very-much-so succeeded in their voice recovery with intense implementation of the Vocal Science technique. They had different voice disorders, but what they had in common was that both were very soft spoken; and as they revealed to me, they have spoken in that manner even before their voices ceased.

In order to help these people (or anybody else for that matter) I usually ask them questions about their childhood and upbringing.

Both revealed that they were deprived of desired love and care from their parents and loved ones. They had strong curfews on every level, but especially, they were practically restricted of their speech and self expression. They (for the most time) were not allowed to speak in front of their parents presence or, if they were, they had to speak very quietly and very softly.

Unfortunately, they carried it all to their adulthood. They grew up to be very suppressed emotionally and vocally. They also grew up being very sensitive to any imperfections in life, as they were brought up to be told that they were never good enough and that they had to achieve the absolute perfection in anything they were doing.

Naturally, their confidence (in life in general) was pretty shut down and, nevertheless, their spirit (I.e., their voice) was quite shut down as well. However, to their credit, they were trying to compensate the lack of communication and the lack of self expression in the past by acquiring good jobs which required a lot of communication, and also, lots of friends, which were compensating for the lack of closeness with their families.

Now they went all out… so to speak. They spoke at all given times; and spoke loud (without boarders).

And then suddenly, they have noticed that their voices becoming, again, soft and softer… Their voices started to crack, became hoarse and raspy and the male voice started braking into soprano tone. They were devastated, because, finally, now when they could freely express themselves, their voices were not cooperating with their inner desires, unfortunately.

The above stories are pretty sad, however, both had a happy ending. I was able to help them to recover their voice and rejuvenate their spirits. Now, everything what they feel became congruent with their vocal expression!

The mission has been accomplished and two more lives were salvaged, saved and nurtured to the greater success in their adulthood years yet to come

Regain your voice and your confidence back!

Your voice… desired and deserved!

More and more professional artists end up with the vocal injuries.

Nearly every week, we hear that various concerts and tours have been canceled and the lead singers (either a soloist or band lead singer) just about to undergo a vocal cord surgery.

How sad is that? Sad indeed!

hoarse-voice.jpg

Why does it happen and why it happens to so many artists? Is it because they are overworked and over-stressed? I think that definitely the above are the factors.  However, if their technical merit of their singing had been intact, less tragedies and cancellations of their performances would take place.

So, human being puzzle (in a manner of speaking), like any puzzle, has many components and pieces, which have to fall into the right places. Those singers’ lifestyles, naturally, are very active and filled with a lot of appearances, interviews and performances.

Due to the above, their immune systems become weakened; and thus, as well, they could much easier pick up any viruses or any sicknesses for that matter. In their busy lives, their voices are in the most used mode; and thus, for them to get any vocal injury is literally not too difficult.

The other aspect of it is a lack of knowledge of how to power their voice with no pain or strain on their vocal anatomy. Also a lack of knowledge of how to work smart and not hard; and with the minimum effort achieve the maximum result.

The latter will assure “The Biggest Winner” rather then “The Biggest Loser”; however, if they manage to “lose” their vocal injuries, or better yet, not to acquire them in the first place, they will become “ the biggest loser” (in the better understanding of that word).

I could compare it with a TV show, In fact, named “The Biggest Loser”. That show is about the struggle of very obese people who forever have been struggling with their excess weight. They obviously have been unable to lose that much weight on their own, and they also realized (some of them just in time) that they need professional help not only to lose their weight, but also to save their lives. Was that easy for them? Not at all! But majority of them claimed their lives back; and some of them just simply saved their lives.

They have desired to live the normal life and they have realized that they have deserved it!

Yes, they became “The Biggest Losers”; but in reality, They Are The Champions!

The band “Queen” performed an all time well-known song called “We Are The Champions”. This song is indeed very inspirational and it is applicable to all of us!

So if you, my reader, also have any vocal issues, (speaking or singing), become inspired to learn how to avoid vocal injuries. However, if they have already occurred, learn how to fix all of your vocal imperfections and acquire a whole new application of voice, using all together new parts of your anatomy to save, protect and prosper your voice to the foreseeable future!

*Mind, body and soul… and your voice*

In 1984, we have opened the school, which was originally
named: The Royans School for the Musical Performing Arts. Almost right from the
start, we have enrolled over 100 students, consisting of children, teenagers
and adults.
After my partner (the second Royan) had passed away in 1986,
a year after, (in 1987), I changed the name of the school and it became well
known as The Royans Professional Vocal School. And at that time, the school
became primarily an adult vocal school and children became a minority. However,
we always have been working with teenagers and young adults, developing their
talents for the music industry at large.  Nevertheless though, working primarily with
adults, provided me with a lot of experience and education concerning North
American mentality.
Being an educator by trade and a very inquisitive person by
nature, I have been tuning in to those adults who allowed me to get themselves
under my care; and not only vocally, but holistically over all. They allowed me
“in” (so to speak) and carried on with quite intimate details about
themselves, their families and their relationships.

Not all of them, by far, enrolled in my program out of happiness.

On the contrary, a lot of them possessed stuffed-up emotions
sitting deeply inside of them, and also a lot of hurt and very low spirits. I
always said that the voice is your “spirit”
and has to be discovered, uncovered and ‘made to be flown away from the
physical body’. So their vocal training had consisted of a lot of counseling on
life in general and their lives in particular.
Via special speech exercises and specially selected scripts
(peculiarly enough) quite related to their situation in general and even their
own situation in particular, they have been able to open up their chest (in which
the human beings usually hold a lot of unreleased emotions) and thus, to bring
their voices (i.e., their spirits) up and out onto the surface.
With the lift of their voice off of the vocal anatomy and
(so to speak) un-stucking it from within, they felt much more released, and
nevertheless, much freer from whatever was bothering them in the recent and
even distant past.

The freer the sound of the voice is, the freer the person will feel.

Once the voice is discovered and gets to be flown, the
person feels that he/she had acquired “wings” in a manner of speaking. So now,
we had killed two birds with one stone, so to speak.
The voice got developed in its fullest capacity; the “Genie
in the bottle” got freed up and flew to the Universe where the sky is the limit;
and thus, the person finally got free from all of the stuffed-up emotions and
inhibitions. The confidence now is soaring, as the great knowledge and
understanding took place.
So, you (my reader) should agree that, all and all, it is a
WINNING combination; and, no doubt, WINNING situation on every level.

One day, you wake up and you notice that suddenly, your voice is not the same as it normally is. You think to yourself that ‘maybe its just morning raspiness and it will go away later in the day.  Five (or more) days pass and you realize that your voice is not getting any better. It’s actually getting worse with every word you try to convey. On top of that, your throat feels like it is on fire and it has been burning severely.

So, by now, you have come to the realization that something is definitely wrong there… The voice feels weak, and on top of it, it sounds raspy and hoarse.

“What could I do to make it better” you ask yourself in desperation?

Of course, right away, you turn to the “all reliable” internet for answers to your vocal dilemma, and find out that all of their “answers” are just generic explanation websites which, at most times, do not lead you to the best diagnosis and/or treatments.

Throat Problem 9

Now, you are lost completely and totally unaware of what to do to conquer your newly discovered vocal problem…

My advise would be that, first and foremost, do not panic; but instead, find a good medical professional and get an accurate diagnosis. If you get a clean bill of health, then seek a holistic practitioner (voice/vocal specialist) who specializes in voice problems. Acquiring appropriate voice/vocal techniques and the application of natural herbal and homeopathic remedies, should do the trick, so to speak.

If you, (God forbid) are diagnosed with some kind of growths on your vocal cords; such as polyps, nodules, cysts, lesions and etc., you should still look for a non-surgical alternative before committing yourself to surgical interference.

For example: The Vocal Science™ Technique advocates the minimal (if at all) use of the vocal cords.

Some of you are probably aware that you have only so many ‘strums’ per vocal cords, for the length of your life. Naturally the less you use your vocal cords; the more you preserve its health and length.

But what if you need to use your voice quite excessively? For example: What if your job requires you to speak on the phone all day, or you happen to be a professional speaker or singer?

I think that I have the answer for you:

I found the way to decrease the pressure of the sound on the vocal anatomy via my specially designed speech and singing exercises, coupled with special body movements.

Those exercises will allow your voice to be lifted off of the vocal box and off of the vocal cords by the way of restructuring the sound into the set of the facial muscles, which will, in turn, begin to work in full conjunction and coordination with your abdominal muscles (for greater support of the lift); thus minimizing the use of your throat, larynx and your vocal cords.

However, if the above took place; and, after awhile, your previously diagnosed growth is not, at least, shrinking in size, you should return to the ENT surgeon and ask for a reassessment.

In this case, it might be wise to undergo a surgical procedure and then come back to the non-surgical post-operative care and thus assure that your voice disorder will not reoccur ever again.

We wish you all a healthy and pleasant voice!

All you have to lose is your stress and fear; All you have to gain is your voice and overall health.

When a regular person suddenly begins to experience some voice problems, it becomes very devastating and, nevertheless, very scary.

When a singer begins to experience a loss of range, and hoarseness of voice, not only does it cause stress and extreme fear of losing their career, but it becomes completely unbearable and extremely stressful for that individual; and of course, all of it effects his/hers overall health. The musicians in general are usually extremely emotional and quite passionate, which is not always beneficial to their physical well being.

It is a well-known fact that a lot of diseases are emotionally induced and then they manifest in the physical body. The stress alone can cause quite a change in the chemical composition and thus, can cause a complete imbalance in the body. If brought to the absolute boiling point, it will most likely attack the weakest organ in this individual’s body. Those people who use their throat and their vocal anatomy quite excessively (due to their occupation) most likely will experience a vocal issue.

Those who are already experiencing vocal problems, no doubts, will be stressed to the max (speaking or singing), and that, in turn, will create some other physical body problems, such it could be, for example, their liver…

The holistic teaching indicates that those individuals who do experience liver problems, usually posses suppressed anger within themselves. When, for example, the thyroid is attacked, it usually represents that the sufferer is experiencing suppressed emotions and hurts. Very often, when doctors order to remove the thyroid, they also, quite often “butcher” the vocal box and almost 9 out of 10 patients are waking up with a paralyzed vocal cord(s).

So all of it, as you can see, is, nevertheless, a vicious circle. In other words, if you already have a vocal problem, the stress and fear will make it worse and might even affect the other vital organs of your body. If you have stress and fears caused by other factors, you may acquire vocal issues (speaking and/or singing). However, the singers who don’t know how to save and protect their voice for life, and who don’t own the proper vocal technique, most likely, sooner or later, will acquire various vocal disorders.

If you understand correctly the content, you will draw a conclusion that all of our organs (brain included) are completely interconnected; thus the approach to any physical imbalance (voice included) MUST be approached holistically and NEVER by itself. Once the physical body is in balance and intact, the spirit in such body will be also happy and healthy.

The voice IS your spirit.

It is also a reflection of the state of your whole being and it is, nevertheless, an Identification of who you truly are!

Alternative Approach To Speaking and Singing Voice Mechanics.

We are getting a lot of inquiries from people who suffer from various voice/vocal disorders. They are suffering from vocal issues such as: nodules, polyps, lesions, cysts, papillomas, paralyzed vocal cords and many other vocal problems. Naturally, some people want to resolve their vocal cord growth non-surgically; and this is definitely the right thing to do. However, the majority of them outright presume that the minute they start adapting the new mechanics of the voice, combined with the natural herbal treatment, their growth will magically disappear, and moreover, in the nick of time nevertheless.

Yes, in more light conditions like, for example: pre-nodules or very small nodules/polyps, etc., they do disappear in a reasonably short time. The fact is that once the voice is lifted off of the vocal box and off of the vocal cords, it is no longer rubbing off of those cords; and once the appropriate herbal remedies (sometimes coupled with homeopathic substances) oxygenate the bottom of the throat enough, no growth will be able to live in that oxygenated environment.

Any sensible person (even with an average IQ) will understand what I am trying to explain here. But, believe it or not, it is very difficult to bring it to people’s understanding. In fact, I have just hung up the phone with somebody who has been suffering with Spasmodic Dysphonia for 12 years!

The very first thing she had asked me was if I could treat her condition (nevertheless, Spasmodic Dysphonia, however, fairly, in a light form) with the herbal remedies…?

Go figure!

Also, when I had stressed the point (which I am trying to convey in this blog) that I would not be able to guarantee the cure of such a neurological disorder, but however, could guarantee at least 80% to 90% of

speech improvement, she got very discouraged and, on that note, cut our phone conversation short. She was also offered a discounted price (which is in force right now, due to the celebration of our schools 32nd anniversary).

With the price quoted, she nearly had a ‘heart attack’ and hung-up the phone very fast.  One more time again, this person has been suffering with her voice disorder for 12 years…? She, evidently, still has no idea what it would take to improve her speech.

Of course, we wish her all the best and, likewise, to many others; but she, unfortunately, had declined her one and only way to hear her voice sounding (at least somewhat) normal once again.

Now, I would like to give you an example, so that you could understand better with respect to what I mean by treatment and improvement VS complete cure of whichever voice/vocal issue.

Let’s take, for example, the case of the South African Athlete, Oscar Pistorius.

Due to a birth defect, both of his legs got amputated before his first Birthday; and ever since, he has been wearing prosthetics. Nevertheless, with those prosthetics, he became a great athlete and had been winning multiple gold medals (Olympic Games included).

With that said, could anybody in the world give him his legs back (to run and to win)? Needless to say, that would not be possible. But what was possible is to get the best prosthetics and get him highly trained to use those prosthetics as his own legs.

Similarly, it is ultimately the same of what I am preaching and advocating with respect of non-surgical voice repair treatments

To conclude: I may not (in an instant) be able to fully cure your vocal cords growth, as it requires some time (if at all); but I will be able to treat your condition and bring your voice up to a  “high gear” so that, when you speak or sing, nobody will know the difference.

Isn’t that the objective of the above exercise?
