Posts Tagged ‘fix my voice’

I had a lot of speaking and singing students (especially in the past) with quite severe lisps and some stuttering. It is a known fact that when the stuttering person begins to sing, the stuttering disappears. But the objective here is to reduce that stuttering not just during singing, but also while speaking on an everyday basis. Similarly, when the person lisps and pronounces “F” instead of “S” (for example, “Fnow” instead of “Snow”).

Over the years, by osmosis, I discovered that the Vocal Science Technique eliminated that lisp practically on the root, as by “biting above the air”, it produces sound which puts the voice in complete balance when it enters the facial cavities, provided that the lift to those cavities is supported by the abdominal muscles. The enunciation and pronunciation becomes crystal clear due to all the vowels and consonants getting placed in the right set of muscles.
So when the support, structure, placement and projection of the voice is accomplished, the lisp is definitely not going to be present and even the stuttering will become much lighter and may also even disappear altogether.
Those people who possess those aforementioned voice disorders, most of the time, are also emotionally very fragile. A lot of them had been teased and even bullied during their school years which made them more silent then they should have been. Needless to say, those people are very insecure and lack a lot of confidence. They think very low about themselves, and due to that factor, their personal and business relationships are greatly effected. They try to find jobs which do not require any speaking. They are shy and timid and their confidence is often just nonexistent.
So, in those cases, my work is definitely cut out for me. As not only I need to fix their voice, I need to work on them as a whole, carefully catering to their emotions and insecurities. The overall work that needs to be done is definitely holistic. Nevertheless, these people are experiencing an inconsistency between what they want to say and feel and what comes out of their mouths. Needless to say, it is extremely frustrating to the person in question.
So if any of you suffer from anything that I had described above, please be advised that we can help you a great deal to become the best you can be and regain your self-esteem, self worth and your confidence overall, which by itself (would be right to make a statement), is priceless!

Thank God that not too often, but still, we are getting inquiries from regular speakers and some singers who were diagnosed with a voice disorder called Sulcus Vocalis.

These type of people usually possess a raspy and hoarse voice and can also sound like they stutter a little, as due to the enlarged gap between their vocal cords, their voice falls in between. The timing of vocal cords opening and closing does not correspond with the voice occurrence; and therefore, the above described symptoms do prevail. By that point, the “alignment” between the subconscious mind, conscious mind, physical body and the voice is challenged.

So the total aim (using specially developed speech exercises for that matter, coupled with the unique body movements) is to put the “alignment” between the above aforementioned components back to order; and thus, achieve total balance on a mental, physical, physiological, emotional and vocal level. Once the integration and synergy between the described components are achieved, the vocal cords will be commanded to come back to the proper width between them.

This revolutionary technique is also applicable to singers who, in any case, having any kind of vocal disorder, would have to start with bringing their speaking voice in proper order.

As a positive side-effect and due to all of those manipulations, the sufferer’s voice will be lifted to the much higher level of existence; and thus, the opening of the lower throat will become available for natural herbal and homeopathic treatment, which will also play a very instrumental role in the voice recovery and restoration. With this type of voice/vocal disorder, no doubt, the flora of the lower throat would be quite disturbed.

First of all, the bottom anatomy is hurt and wounded, because the person who acquired such a voice disorder as Sulcus Vocalis, no doubts (in the first place) was misusing and abusing his/her speaking and or singing voice by speaking or singing loudly and forcefully. Of course, there are some other factors that could prevail and induce the above described condition. Unfortunately for such patients, neither the ENT Specialists nor Speech Therapists could offer any solution to that kind of a voice problem.

We, however, are not only involved in solving vocal problems full-time, we are also employing full-time care, experience, knowledge and passion.

We proudly provide our clients with valuable voice and health solutions!!

Given that we live in a digital era, more and more we have been asked if we provide Non-Surgical Voice Repair Services remotely, i.e., via Skype, FaceTime, WeChat and etc.

This trend started a few years ago and, at that time, I thought that people were simply joking…! I thought “they could not be serious”, as any vocal disorder could represent a serious internal problem.

facetime

In fact, I just came back from my travels in the Middle East and unfortunately ended up (due to one of my relatives’ serious medical problem) in an ICU section of the hospital. In fact, they did not call it ICU (like in North America). They call it the “Internal Medicine Department”.

It confused me at first, but after thoroughly thinking about it, I understood the total meaning of the name “Internal Medicine”, which totally matched the description. All of those people in that wing were cared for 24/7 and all of the monitors (which they were connected to) were also supervised 24/7.

Respectively, I treat all voice disorders as any complicated internal health problem would be treated, as a lot of the time, the loss of voice (for example) could represent a very serious internal dysfunction, such as (even) cancer.

damaged-voice

So given the complexity of the above, do some people really think that it could be addressed remotely?? If they do, they themselves (nevertheless) need to have their head examined. (in fact and sadly, with that comment, I’m not even joking!)

Let me give you one example, which occurred a couple of years ago, but, to this day, I still cannot get over of that phone call. My caller was a “distraught” mother of a 15 years old teenager, as she identified as a pop star. Her pop star daughter had seen 5 ENT specialists who had granted her with 5 very serious diagnoses. You name it, she’s got it!

My heart immediately opened up to the child with serious vocal problems, which were not only impeding on her vocal performance, but also on her social life and teenage life in general. I began my presentation with respect to how I can approach treating all of those serious vocal disorders, obviously presuming that we are talking about the mother and the daughter taking the trip to Toronto Canada and “landing” straight in my studio.

After the extensive conversation with whole bunch of very valuable explanations from my side, her last question to me was, “Can we do a FaceTime please?” That question left me “speechless”. I could not believe my ears…

Instead of asking me how soon I would be able to accept and embrace her daughter in order to literally save her life, she was asking if I could deal with all FIVE MAJOR vocal problems (possessed by her daughter) via phone or computer! Go figure!

Nowadays, people think that any problems could be solved from the distance and not in person. Please think again! Will you ask a masseuse, chiropractor or hair dresser to attend to your body or to your hair via computer? I’m afraid that some people are already thinking about it. LOL! Maybe we should also have all the hospitals closed and conduct all the surgeries, CAT scans and MRI’s remotely? Wouldn’t that be something?

For those people who think so, we suggest to purchase something along the lines of a Gear VR, or even better, an Oculus Rift!

Those gadgets would give these people a perfect illusion of the virtual world, but eventually, they will have to come back to earth and “smell the coffee” (so to speak); i.e., have a hard-core check with reality, which will allow them, finally, to get off of their couches and start dealing with the real world and the real problems, one or two of which, in fact, could be enhanced voice or vocal problems.

How The Suppressed Emotions, Lack of Talking in the Childhood Years (Due To Strict Upbringing), And Enormous Stress, Can Effect Your Speaking Voice Down The Road To Your Adulthood?

Due to my profession and extensive practice, I meet all kinds of people; all heights and weights, all colours and cultures and (in general) people from all walks of life.

Being situated in Canada for over 36 years and running my Professional Vocal School for nearly 33 years, surprisingly enough (and especially lately) my business took a different turn and became at least 95% international. Our primary market for voice repairs happens to be American.

Quite recently, I completed two voice repair projects, one of which was from Seattle, US, and the other from the State of Minnesota.  Needless to say, both of those adults (nevertheless with speech/voice disorders) very-much-so succeeded in their voice recovery with intense implementation of the Vocal Science technique. They had different voice disorders, but what they had in common was that both were very soft spoken; and as they revealed to me, they have spoken in that manner even before their voices ceased.

In order to help these people (or anybody else for that matter) I usually ask them questions about their childhood and upbringing.

Both revealed that they were deprived of desired love and care from their parents and loved ones. They had strong curfews on every level, but especially, they were practically restricted of their speech and self expression. They (for the most time) were not allowed to speak in front of their parents presence or, if they were, they had to speak very quietly and very softly.

Unfortunately, they carried it all to their adulthood. They grew up to be very suppressed emotionally and vocally. They also grew up being very sensitive to any imperfections in life, as they were brought up to be told that they were never good enough and that they had to achieve the absolute perfection in anything they were doing.

Naturally, their confidence (in life in general) was pretty shut down and, nevertheless, their spirit (I.e., their voice) was quite shut down as well. However, to their credit, they were trying to compensate the lack of communication and the lack of self expression in the past by acquiring good jobs which required a lot of communication, and also, lots of friends, which were compensating for the lack of closeness with their families.

Now they went all out… so to speak. They spoke at all given times; and spoke loud (without boarders).

And then suddenly, they have noticed that their voices becoming, again, soft and softer… Their voices started to crack, became hoarse and raspy and the male voice started braking into soprano tone. They were devastated, because, finally, now when they could freely express themselves, their voices were not cooperating with their inner desires, unfortunately.

The above stories are pretty sad, however, both had a happy ending. I was able to help them to recover their voice and rejuvenate their spirits. Now, everything what they feel became congruent with their vocal expression!

The mission has been accomplished and two more lives were salvaged, saved and nurtured to the greater success in their adulthood years yet to come

For at least the last 25 years, we have been specializing in extreme voice disorders such as:

  • Muscle Tension Dysphonia
  • Spasmodic Dysphonia
  • Polyps & Nodules on the vocal cords
  • Cysts & Lesions on the vocal cords and the throat
  • Acid Reflux effecting the vocal box
  •  Laryngitis
  • Sulcus Vocalis (enlarged gap between the vocal folds)
  • Strained Vocal Cords
  • Vocal Cord Paresis
  • Partially Lost Voice

– And that’s just to name a few.

Both regular speaking people and or singers could possess the above-described vocal injuries.

As strange as it sounds, the regular speaking people are taking their injuries much harder then the actual singers.

In fact, in a lot of cases, singers may still have their speaking voices somewhat intact; and therefore, it is not that detrimental for them just to lose their singing voice capacity then for speakers to completely lose their tool for communication. Of course, no matter how you slice it, speakers and singers are both greatly effected by their voice/vocal injury.

The speakers, in a lot of times, feel that their lives are over, as it is difficult for them to communicate. They often begin to learn sign language and/or rely on writing on a white board in order to be heard and understood. Moreover, they are usually, for years, have been trying different speech therapists and vocal coaches; but nevertheless, evidently, always to no avail.

I would like to quote one of our recent Non-Surgical Voice Repair Clients who had said in her Post Course Letter to us:

“It’s such a relief to have someone to go to if I have issues with my voice, as before I felt so alone and had no idea what to do, so many thanks”.

This particular person had suffered with quite significant voice loss, severe pain in the throat, and had to live with the diagnosis of Muscle Tension Dysphonia for 5 years.

This young beautiful adult was suggested to stop speaking for good, go on disability and find a job which does not require any speaking. Before she came to us, she was ready to quit University, prior quitting the high school choir and the part-time job, which had required her to speak with the customers.

Her Mom and her flew to us for over 30 hours to obtain our unique instruction and natural holistic treatment.

By the end of her 50 hour ordeal, not only was she able to speak with clear announced and pronounced voice (as her mom qualified as a radio voice), but she was also able to embark upon my regular singing exercises (designed for singers with no vocal damage) and a piece of the song “Can’t help Falling In Love” by Elvis.

That was our Triumph!!

No doubts this beautiful girl regained her speaking and even (partially) her singing voice (partially only due to the lack of time), and has already begun to reclaim her life back and will continue to do so for days to come. As far as we are concerned, one more life had been salvaged and reclaimed with very hard work – but with a very high reward in the end.

“Although it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and there were many obstacles along the way, I completed 50 hours with Diana because in the end it was worth it.“

Elle Rider of New Zealand

On that note, we would say – Way to go Girl!

The Best is Yet to Come!

We listen…

We care…

We are here to serve you with respect, integrity, and attention to the minutest details concerning your voice problems.

If you think that you have a problem with your voice, we will be able to help.

We have been specializing in non-surgical voice repair for nearly 30 years.

If you have been scheduled for a vocal operation before you have contacted us, please consult with us first, as we might be able to save you from the surgical intervention, which, by it self, could be pretty dangerous. It could possibly leave scar tissue on the vocal cords; and thus, will deprive (especially singers) from pursuing their careers any longer.

Also, to go under the knife or laser will not solve your voice/vocal issues. In the best-case scenario, your vocal cords will be somewhat fixed, but the application and conduct of your voice will remain to be the same. With that said, your original vocal issue (especially growths on the vocal cords; such as polyps, nodules, cysts or papilloma) may return multiple times.

Clearly, there is no change without change!

In fact, the described-above case is related to Julie Andrews, who, after vocal surgery, ended up with scar tissue on one of her vocal cords; and thus, was never able to resume her singing career, not to mention that, for quite some time, she had a problem even with her speaking voice.

The comedian, Joan Rivers, went to a well-known clinic in New York appointing a top ENT surgeon to laser the polyp on her vocal cord. Unfortunately, she never woke up after that surgery.

Therefore, in my opinion, anybody should treat the possibility of surgical interference as a last resort. I am sure that everybody knows that when you go for help to a medical professional, you are just a “case number”. Unfortunately, a good majority of them are mostly “billing”, instead of “healing”.

It is a different story when you go to a private, alternative health practitioner.  They are usually much more attentive to you and your problem.

They obtain all of your history from the beginning of your problem(s) occurrence, trying to find the cause rather then focus on the symptoms opposed to medical doctors.

The medical doctors are very big on trying to mask symptoms, giving useless prescriptions and are very keen on performing surgeries (vocal surgeries included).

The alternative practitioner is looking into the root of the problem, and once discovered, he/she outlines the best course of action that is best applicable to the specific problem.

All of those problems (vocal included) are best solved with the herbal and homeopathic means. However, with respect to voice problems, that alone is not enough. The sufferer in question has to be taught a proper voice/vocal technique for those natural remedies to work to its fullest capacity.

Unless the vocal box is released from the pressure of the sound, the natural remedies will be practically obsolete.

We, at The Royans Institute, combine our unique Vocal Science ™ method with the great knowledge of specific herbal and homeopathic remedies, which greatly aid to one’s voice healing.

We discover, we uncover, we fix and design a new technical pattern for the human voice to work in its fullest capacity and with no pain or strain to the vocal anatomy.

We are vocal architects – and our mission is to build and (if needed) rebuild your voice by design and expertise.

Regain your voice and your confidence back!

Your voice… desired and deserved!

More and more professional artists end up with the vocal injuries.

Nearly every week, we hear that various concerts and tours have been canceled and the lead singers (either a soloist or band lead singer) just about to undergo a vocal cord surgery.

How sad is that? Sad indeed!

hoarse-voice.jpg

Why does it happen and why it happens to so many artists? Is it because they are overworked and over-stressed? I think that definitely the above are the factors.  However, if their technical merit of their singing had been intact, less tragedies and cancellations of their performances would take place.

So, human being puzzle (in a manner of speaking), like any puzzle, has many components and pieces, which have to fall into the right places. Those singers’ lifestyles, naturally, are very active and filled with a lot of appearances, interviews and performances.

Due to the above, their immune systems become weakened; and thus, as well, they could much easier pick up any viruses or any sicknesses for that matter. In their busy lives, their voices are in the most used mode; and thus, for them to get any vocal injury is literally not too difficult.

The other aspect of it is a lack of knowledge of how to power their voice with no pain or strain on their vocal anatomy. Also a lack of knowledge of how to work smart and not hard; and with the minimum effort achieve the maximum result.

The latter will assure “The Biggest Winner” rather then “The Biggest Loser”; however, if they manage to “lose” their vocal injuries, or better yet, not to acquire them in the first place, they will become “ the biggest loser” (in the better understanding of that word).

I could compare it with a TV show, In fact, named “The Biggest Loser”. That show is about the struggle of very obese people who forever have been struggling with their excess weight. They obviously have been unable to lose that much weight on their own, and they also realized (some of them just in time) that they need professional help not only to lose their weight, but also to save their lives. Was that easy for them? Not at all! But majority of them claimed their lives back; and some of them just simply saved their lives.

They have desired to live the normal life and they have realized that they have deserved it!

Yes, they became “The Biggest Losers”; but in reality, They Are The Champions!

The band “Queen” performed an all time well-known song called “We Are The Champions”. This song is indeed very inspirational and it is applicable to all of us!

So if you, my reader, also have any vocal issues, (speaking or singing), become inspired to learn how to avoid vocal injuries. However, if they have already occurred, learn how to fix all of your vocal imperfections and acquire a whole new application of voice, using all together new parts of your anatomy to save, protect and prosper your voice to the foreseeable future!
