I had a lot of speaking and singing students (especially in the past) with quite severe lisps and some stuttering. It is a known fact that when the stuttering person begins to sing, the stuttering disappears. But the objective here is to reduce that stuttering not just during singing, but also while speaking on an everyday basis. Similarly, when the person lisps and pronounces “F” instead of “S” (for example, “Fnow” instead of “Snow”).

Over the years, by osmosis, I discovered that the Vocal Science Technique eliminated that lisp practically on the root, as by “biting above the air”, it produces sound which puts the voice in complete balance when it enters the facial cavities, provided that the lift to those cavities is supported by the abdominal muscles. The enunciation and pronunciation becomes crystal clear due to all the vowels and consonants getting placed in the right set of muscles.
So when the support, structure, placement and projection of the voice is accomplished, the lisp is definitely not going to be present and even the stuttering will become much lighter and may also even disappear altogether.
Those people who possess those aforementioned voice disorders, most of the time, are also emotionally very fragile. A lot of them had been teased and even bullied during their school years which made them more silent then they should have been. Needless to say, those people are very insecure and lack a lot of confidence. They think very low about themselves, and due to that factor, their personal and business relationships are greatly effected. They try to find jobs which do not require any speaking. They are shy and timid and their confidence is often just nonexistent.
So, in those cases, my work is definitely cut out for me. As not only I need to fix their voice, I need to work on them as a whole, carefully catering to their emotions and insecurities. The overall work that needs to be done is definitely holistic. Nevertheless, these people are experiencing an inconsistency between what they want to say and feel and what comes out of their mouths. Needless to say, it is extremely frustrating to the person in question.
So if any of you suffer from anything that I had described above, please be advised that we can help you a great deal to become the best you can be and regain your self-esteem, self worth and your confidence overall, which by itself (would be right to make a statement), is priceless!

To find out what they are, Please Read On…

Due to this digital and very chemically polluted world, we are receiving more and more inquiries about various vocal disorders which people experience on a day by day basis.

Our fruits and vegetables are chemically altered and our chickens (for example) are double-sized, due to be fed and raised with hormones and antibiotics.

All of the above weakens our immune systems and makes us susceptible to all kinds of diseases; and unfortunately, cancer is one of them. Almost on an everyday basis, we are hearing about peoples’ thyroids being removed (usually due to cancer); and then, as a result of that, one (or even both) vocal cords  become paralyzed!

Also, people who have their regular diets consisting of a lot of fat, mucus and acids, could get a problem with the excess of gastric acid in their bodies, which could produce what’s called acid reflux; and which, in turn, may burn ones’ vocal cords and (on top of it) restrict the persons’ breathing.

And lastly, the improper application of the voice for speakers and singers, could lead to a serious voice damage.

So, especially for singers, the proper vocal technique should be a MUST so (by the application of the latter) the singer could save and protect his/her voice for a lifetime.

As for regular speaking people, I would suggest to be also in check with their speaking voice, i.e., not to scream or yell on a regular basis; keep your throat protected out of the cold and out of outer pollutions (such as smoking, drinking and drugs).  Also, beware of second hand smoke, which also could be very harmful to you in general and to your vocal anatomy in particular.

So, if some of the above had happened to you, but you managed to fix your voice, (hopefully, non-invasively and non-surgically), at that point, you will be able to enjoy the positive side-effects of that occurrence!

Once you have regained and restored your voice back to normal, (or almost back to normal), your happiness and your confidence will rise to the max (and rightfully so).

I have a true belief that your voices IS your spirit; and once you lift your voice, you will uplift your spirit!

What do I mean by “lifting your voice”?

I mean that, in any case (voice repair or not) the sound of the voice has to be restructured to the different set of muscles located in your facial cavities. By removing the pressure of the sound from the vocal box, it will allow the vocal anatomy to be free and healed (if needed).

The above will facilitate a “true vocal rest”.

Those facial muscles will play the role of the natural amplifier (or what we call, resonator); provided though that the lift of the voice to those muscles will be supported by the abdominal muscles; and thus, the voice will “blast off”!

My book is named “Vocal Science – Flight to the Universe”, and the very first picture of a space shuttle illustrates the blast-off of a rocket, which separates from the launching pad and flies on top of its fuel.

The caption of that picture in the book allegorically suggests that the launching pad represents the human body, the fuel underneath of the rocket represents the breathing, (and finally) the rocket represents the soaring voice which is flying to its aimed destination and upon design. When the rocket is launched, it’s being aimed to either the Moon or to Mars…

The flight of such rocket is regulated by scientists and engineers who are staying put on earth. Respectively, you can only become an owner of your voice when you predominantly are able to know how to launch your sound and where that sound will land.

Once you acquire such knowledge, you will acquire a very pleasant side-effect of it… YOUR CONFIDENCE!

Lately, more and more, we are getting phone calls and e-mails from people who have been suffering from various voice disorders, and moreover, suffering for many years!

Needless to say, that with time, (10, 20 or even 30 years later) for some reason, their voices did not get cured or even properly treated for that matter; and nevertheless, their voices did not sound any better then at the beginning of their voice/vocal ordeal; rather, in majority of cases, much worse.

In fact, many of them claimed that the quality of their voices became more compromised from the time when their voice issues had originally began.

So the question then is… Why these people, suffering for numerous years, never put a handle on their voice disorder?

I think the answer is that there is not much help available with respect to nonsurgical voice repair, which actually (in most cases) will produce tangible results.

The other reason is that people are absolutely unaware of what’s happening to them and why; not withholding the fact that they are actually even more so unaware how to deal with their voice problems at all!

For example: All of them (regular speaking people and singers, nevertheless) think that there is a problem with their voice when, in reality, the problem is with the application of their voice.

Especially at the beginning of their voice issues, they go to numerous appointments with ENT specialists and speech therapists.

The ENT specialist, at best, could diagnose their disorder, but very rarely, they would offer any constructive course of action with respect of restoration of one’s voice and bringing it back to its normal state.

Of course, if there is an obvious growth on, let’s say the vocal cords, they would be more then happy to operate to remove the growth.

In a vast majority of the latter, those nasty nodules and polyps could be dissolved via special speech and/or singing exercises, which will possess the proper application and proper structure of the sound and which (in turn) will take the voice away from the effected area; and thus, release that effected area from the pressure of the sound and allow the vocal anatomy to heal (giving it a rest) while concurrently receiving the application of the natural herbs and homeopathic remedies for the complete healing of the throat flora.

As we all know, any surgery could produce unforeseen complications such as: scar tissue, sulcus vocalis (enlarged gap between the vocal cords) and even vocal paresis.

Sounds scary… doesn’t it?

But it could be even scarier when the time is lost for surgical interference to take place.

So, as I said in my numerous blogs and publications previously; DO NOT GIVE UP SEARCHING, especially for non-surgical solutions for your vocal problems.

Although, if it is not possible and the vocal surgery is required, please find a qualified surgeon who has a good reputation and a good record dealing with vocal disorders like yours.

However, don’t get fooled if the operation is successful and your voice sounds that much better after it was performed.

Please remember that your, so to speak “instrument” had been fixed, but you, as the “player”, did not learn anything new with respect of the different application of your voice, so that your vocal problem would not reoccur ever again.

With that said, you still need to look for a qualified voice specialist who would teach you how to use your voice correctly, i.e., without any pain or strain on your vocal anatomy and how with the minimum effort, to be able to produce maximum desirable results.

Please also remember that the voice cannot be fixed on its own.

And the more time passes with respect to your voice remaining to be untreated, the more possibilities there will be for your voice never to be recovered, which (no doubts) could, God forbid, lead to a permanent voice loss!

How The Suppressed Emotions, Lack of Talking in the Childhood Years (Due To Strict Upbringing), And Enormous Stress, Can Effect Your Speaking Voice Down The Road To Your Adulthood?

Due to my profession and extensive practice, I meet all kinds of people; all heights and weights, all colours and cultures and (in general) people from all walks of life.

Being situated in Canada for over 36 years and running my Professional Vocal School for nearly 33 years, surprisingly enough (and especially lately) my business took a different turn and became at least 95% international. Our primary market for voice repairs happens to be American.

Quite recently, I completed two voice repair projects, one of which was from Seattle, US, and the other from the State of Minnesota.  Needless to say, both of those adults (nevertheless with speech/voice disorders) very-much-so succeeded in their voice recovery with intense implementation of the Vocal Science technique. They had different voice disorders, but what they had in common was that both were very soft spoken; and as they revealed to me, they have spoken in that manner even before their voices ceased.

In order to help these people (or anybody else for that matter) I usually ask them questions about their childhood and upbringing.

Both revealed that they were deprived of desired love and care from their parents and loved ones. They had strong curfews on every level, but especially, they were practically restricted of their speech and self expression. They (for the most time) were not allowed to speak in front of their parents presence or, if they were, they had to speak very quietly and very softly.

Unfortunately, they carried it all to their adulthood. They grew up to be very suppressed emotionally and vocally. They also grew up being very sensitive to any imperfections in life, as they were brought up to be told that they were never good enough and that they had to achieve the absolute perfection in anything they were doing.

Naturally, their confidence (in life in general) was pretty shut down and, nevertheless, their spirit (I.e., their voice) was quite shut down as well. However, to their credit, they were trying to compensate the lack of communication and the lack of self expression in the past by acquiring good jobs which required a lot of communication, and also, lots of friends, which were compensating for the lack of closeness with their families.

Now they went all out… so to speak. They spoke at all given times; and spoke loud (without boarders).

And then suddenly, they have noticed that their voices becoming, again, soft and softer… Their voices started to crack, became hoarse and raspy and the male voice started braking into soprano tone. They were devastated, because, finally, now when they could freely express themselves, their voices were not cooperating with their inner desires, unfortunately.

The above stories are pretty sad, however, both had a happy ending. I was able to help them to recover their voice and rejuvenate their spirits. Now, everything what they feel became congruent with their vocal expression!

The mission has been accomplished and two more lives were salvaged, saved and nurtured to the greater success in their adulthood years yet to come

Vocal Strain means that the voice was misused or abused in more ways then one.

Sometimes, just regular people end up abusing their voices without being aware of doing so. Some of them are speaking a lot and speaking very forcefully; almost screaming instead of speaking.

They do get tired by the end of the day, but in the morning, they start all over again. Also, if their work requires them to speak on the phone all day, or to teach classes/courses, that’s where the vocal strain may occur; (and sometimes, to the point when they may lost their voice completely). Sometimes, the vocal strain could produce some growths (like nodules or polyps) on the vocal cords. That’s where the “alarm should go off”, so to speak.

Now we are talking about the growth on the vocal cords, which, by itself, is a very serious matter. Either surgically, or preferably non-surgically, any growth has to be eliminated. We know the cases where such growth left not to be treated for a while, turn to being cancerous.

As for singers, due to the lack of the proper technique, they could also acquire serious problems onto their vocal anatomy. Outside of provoking a growth on their vocal cords, they could also end up with Muscle Tension Dysphonia, or even Spasmodic Dysphonia. Very often, the vocal cords strained could lead to a vocal disorder such as sulcus vocalis (enlarged gap between the vocal cords). The vocal cords are so strained that they cannot come back to their original state.

Often, the speaker or singer sounds quite hissy and breathy, which is the first symptom of the above aforementioned vocal disorder. To avoid all of those vocal issues, the singers should adapt such technique, which promotes the safety, health and longevity of one’s voice.

The regular people and the professional people who require extensive use of their voices, should be always on guard with respect to how they use their voice; try to speak less and speak not very loud.

If you, the reader, do notice any changes with your speaking and, or singing voice, stop immediately and assess the situation.

Don’t let it go unnoticed. It may lead you to endanger your voice and even to the complete loss of voice.

REMEMBER, YOU will always need your TOOL OF COMMUNICATION!

Please love it and preserve it for life!

What do you mean by the above, you may ask?

What I mean is that the person in question, immediately after recovering their speech (or their singing voice for that matter), goes on the binge marathon. It’s like a person who has been on a diet for sometime, after loosing the desirable weight, goes right back to their bad eating habits and binges on everything they were deprived of. No doubts that their lost weight will come back really fast and often double their original weight.
Sad?
Indeed!

But that’s haw the human body works. Similarly, it happens with voice repairclients. They acquire virtually a “verbal diarrhea” And in spite of all my warnings and pleadings, they cannot stop talking until they again become raspy and hoarse! Now they are, so to speak, in their “comfort zone” but upset and frustrated that they have lost their ability to communicate with no pain or strain on their vocal anatomy, like they did during the instruction.
Whose fault is that? Obviously their own.
They obviously have not followed the recovery protocol, which was thoroughly and strongly advised to them. Who could they blame now? Obviously themselves.
However, all of us are human and it is understandable that when we become deprived of something, we want to regain it back real fast and that’s where the problem begins. We do not have patience, at least the majority of us.
And those who do, we applaud!
Nobody would imagine the athlete with an injured leg, (with only a few treatments behind his belt) suddenly start running a marathon! To regain the normal function of any organ, especially the limbs, spine and yes, voice, requires time and a strict regimen. In the case of the voice repair, the person requires to speak much less then before (at least for some time).
They have to continuously consume the natural herbs and remedies that were suggested to them. The absolute minimum amount of hours to start the rehab to concur the voice issue would be 30 consecutive hours of unique instruction and natural treatment. For some people that is enough, and they can carry on from there on their own. For others, it requires 2 or even 3 times of repetition of the same and then maintenance – In other words, “tightening the screws” should prevail.
It also depends on the severity of the vocal disorder However, the strong and determined people require less repletion and less maintenance. The more healthy and fit people usually have much less struggle with the instruction, treatment and aftermath. Those (with psychological problems and poor diet) require more attention on both parts – instruction and treatment.

And, as a rule, they have many more problems during and after the process.  Very often, the voice repair clients suffer from many physical and emotional problems, which also contribute to their voice loss and their voice dysfunction. So the voice problem could be a very complicated and deep matter, as the voice loss might be just a symptom of something much more serious going on with the person.
Therefore, the voice issue cannot be taken lightly and should be addressed immediately, as it could be an indication of something serious yet to come, for example, a stroke or heart attack.

I want my readers to understand the seriousness of any voice disorder and address it, if not medically, then alternatively, as soon as possible.

Lately, we are hearing more and more about people’s vocal tragedies.

Some of them have been suffering for years with the loss of their regular voice, speaking and/or singing. Majority of them went to all kinds of doctors and specialists and have been diagnosed with all kinds of health problems related or, most of the times, not related to their vocal performance. The loss of their original speaking and/or singing voice had been blamed on all kinds of the person’s internal health.

Yes, granted some of the internal health problems may be related to the quality of the voice.

For example: If the person practicing an unhealthy diet i.e. consumes a lot of dairy products, that person most likely will possess a lot of mucus everywhere in the body, vocal anatomy included. If the person eats a lot of acidic products like tomatoes, oranges, red meats and others, no doubts this person will suffer from acid reflux.

That said, if they do have a problem with their range and projection of their voice, naturally, their voice is drawn to the lower position, thus it is prone to meet the gastric acid which, in turn, will begin to burn the vocal cords. That said, the inner health and outer fitness would definitely help with whichever vocal problems and/or issues the person may experience.

The cleaner and more fit the physical body is, the stronger and more vibrant the persons’ mind will be also.

The Vocal Science ™ method requires the lift of the voice to the set of the facial muscles/cavities to release the pressure of the sound from the vocal box and vocal cords, per say. If you visualize a ballerina trying to jump taking off of a thick carpet, you can imagine that not only she, most likely, will injure her ankle or knee, but also would never acquire a needed height to accomplish the pas de deux.

That said, if the vocal cords are covered with mucus and the bottom of the throat is full of gastric acid, to lift the sound off of “that ground” could become quite difficult. For that, I am using natural herbs and remedies to clean up the surface of the vocal box to be able to achieve the lift of the voice with the support by the abdominal muscles. So the flora of the throat becomes clean and begins its healing.

The doctors usually “bombard” their clients with a whole bunch of scary sounding definitions and diagnosis. The clients usually tell me that they have no idea how to read, let alone understand their medical transcriptions/reports. It is usually extremely over-exaggerated and, for the longest time, I could not understand why.

One of my new clients reports suggesting that he has had preoperative and postoperative care. In reality, the person never had undergone any vocal surgery whatsoever.

In the not so very distant past, I had a person who worked as a medical assistant and she advised me that every move the doctor makes has a special code.

For example: If the doctor checks your blood pressure, he charges the insurance, (here in Canada), $200.00. I am, sure the ENT specialists are charging for all of their checkups, scopes, and etc..

So my assumption is that the more the doctor writes, the more he is able to charge either the insurance or the person individually.

This is just my general subjective opinion. Take it for what it is.

Sometimes, in fact, “they are right on the money” and they produce the right diagnosis, but they still do not offer, or even suggest, any meaningful help to the sufferer. In majority of cases, the problem is mechanical, but very often coupled with the physical and emotional state of the individual.

So my duty is to dissect the problem into pieces and work on each piece individually and collectively.

That’s what I call forensic analysis and expertise, and yes, it is very applicable to any voice issues.
